Choosing uPVC window frames

There is a lot to consider when choosing uPVC frames. We have outlined some of it below, but that’s just the beginning. uPVC window frames from Germany

Germany is the birthplace of Weru, one of the world’s oldest, largest and most innovative uPVC window manufacturers. To date, they have produced over 25 million frames. Founded in 1843, Weru has been supplying the Netherlands with premium uPVC windows and doors for over 40 years. All of their products are manufactured in two state-of-the-art factories in Southern Germany, tailored to your exact requirements.

Low-maintenance

Weru’s stylish uPVC window frames are available in a surprising variety of designs and finishes. Simply choose your favourite colour and you’ll never have to paint your windows again. uPVC frames are wonderfully low-maintenance, saving you the hassle of sanding, filling and painting, all while cutting your maintenance costs. Plus, a Weru frame will easily last for up to 50 years.

Frame profiles: flush vs recessed

uPVC frames, and pretty much all window frames, for that matter, come in two types: flush and recessed. The traditional Dutch window is what we call a recessed frame. This just means that the window is set back a little from the frame. With a flush frame, the window sits completely level with the frame. A flush frame tends to look more modern, while the recessed frame has a more traditional feel.

The pictures below show a flush and a recessed frame. Recessed uPVC frames go very well with more traditional homes, especially in combination with a woodgrain finish.

Woodgrain, colours and finishes

Weru uPVC frames come in white (RAL 9016) or cream (RAL 9001) as standard, with a smooth finish. Prefer the look of a traditional timber frame? A uPVC frame with a realistic woodgrain effect will do the trick: it is pretty much indistinguishable from the real thing.

You can choose from natural wood effects, such as light or dark oak, walnut or mahogany, as well as painted wood finishes in over 200 RAL colours. Alongside woodgrain, options include textured pearl finishes. The photos below show just a handful of the possibilities. uPVC windows with square-cut mechanical joints

Do you want to replicate traditional woodwork as closely as possible, perhaps because you’re combining timber and uPVC windows in the same property? A square cut mechanical joint, instead of the diagonal mitre weld usually found on uPVC windows, does exactly that. It’s the ultimate finishing touch for an authentic timber-effect finish:

Weru offers three different types of uPVC window frames, which you can customise to your heart’s content. You’ll find the options below, along with a quick overview of their key features. Are you thinking of combining timber and uPVC windows? Insulation and security

Weru uPVC windows have excellent insulation values, which means improved comfort and lower heating bills. And just as you would expect from German engineering, Weru windows offer a high level of burglary protection. This is indicated by the RC (Resistance Class) rating. Weru windows with RC2 rating meet the strict requirements of the Dutch Police Residential Security Warranty. They also carry the KOMO quality mark, a Dutch construction industry certification.

uPVC windows with glazing bars

Glazing bars divide a window into smaller panes to create that traditional look. There are three ways to do that: Georgian bars between the panes, applied glazing bars with matching bars between the panes, or structural glazing bars that divide the glass into separate sections.

uPVC window panels and cladding

Larger window frames with multiple panes often feature infill panels at the bottom. For these, we use highly insulated uPVC panels or cladding in the same colour as the frame. Does the exterior of your property have wooden trim around the window frame? We are more than happy to replace it with uPVC panels for a consistent and visually appealing look and feel.

Safety glass: safety first!

Safety glass is specially laminated glass with a plastic interlayer. If it cracks, the glass stays in the frame, significantly reducing the risk of injury. It also helps protect against break-ins. All of our Weru doors are fitted with safety glass. Additionally, we fully comply with the NEN 3569 safety standards. That means we always install safety glass wherever the distance between the floor and the bottom edge of the glass is less than 85 cm. The same applies to balustrades, skylights, roof lights and overhead glazing, such as conservatories. Because prevention is better than cure.

uPVC window frames with roller shutters

One of the greatest benefits of roller shutters is that they keep out the sun while doubling up as burglary protection. On top of that, they give you extra privacy. Weru custom-builds your shutters to size and pre-assembles them in the factory, so you’re guaranteed a seamless fit. You can choose between manual or electronic operation, and of course they’re available in the exact same colour as your uPVC window frames.

Safe & Go

Yet another clever solution from Weru: leave your window on the ventilation setting while keeping it securely closed. There is no risk of rain getting in, not even during a heavy downpour. And thanks to the heavy-duty hardware, the window cannot be forced open, giving you total peace of mind to air out your home. Even at night or while you’re away.

Replacing your windows step by step

We often get asked if you have to replace all your windows at the same time. And the answer is: no, absolutely not! You could start with the front of your house and do the back of the house at a later stage. Or do the ground floor first, and work your way up. It’s a great way to spread the costs over several years.

If you go for Castello Trado or Castello Realto frames and combine them with a woodgrain finish and square-cut mechanical joints, you’ll barely notice the difference with your existing timber frames. But you will most certainly notice the benefits of far better insulation and virtually no maintenance!

Why not pair your new uPVC window frames with custom-made pleated blinds, roller blinds or Venetian blinds? We also install insect screens to keep annoying creepy crawlies out.
